Focus on Fiber Florida Style
Along with stitching fabrics together, we stitch friendships that have lasted through the years. Sunrise walks on the beach, dancing on the boardwalks, sharing wine and cheese at 5 PM all become bonding moments much stronger than quilted fabrics.

Each year members find some projects that they share with others; teach techniques they've learned; develop new friendships and art.

Self Managed Retreat: Enjoy a true retreat from the frantic fiber world at beautiful Atlantic Center for the Arts in New Smyrna Beach, Florida.. Nothing is required of attendees other than they enjoy themselves and renew their spirits.  Along with spacious studios specifically set up for computers, painting, dyeing and sewing, there is room for sculpture, dance, yoga, and quiet spots for reading, writing and communing with nature. One year we added a slam poetry and drum circle as optional events. Depending on the talents of our group, we’ve had music, poetry, jokes, dance and open forums after dinner.

We've even had (log) pole dancing but too fewer of us could get up from a squat after dinner each year so that was omitted along with lectures and trips to museums as they required too much structure or time away from the studios!  Each year participants rewrite the rules. Feel free to suggest or offer new events.

Tom Kurtzhals, our personal chef, is dedicated to giving us options for special diets, picky eaters and foodies. You might gain weight at the retreat but there are many steps between studios, private rooms, and the Commons where 3 meals a day are provided. So you'll have to work hard to keep the pounds on and there are fat wheeled bikes available to help work off the special desserts. Tom even provides two blenders for those into green drinks and such.

The rooms are all private with personal baths and refrigerators. They are big enough to hold a group "wine and tell" party on the last night - or any other time!  Yet, when you close the door to your room, you are in your own world. Bring warm and chill clothes, umbrellas or rain gear as well as shorts, tank tops and swimsuits if you intend to head to the beach. A blanket/quilt is good too to make your room look homier and Spring is always a surprise in Florida.  But, we promise, there will be NO SNOW and it's too early for Hurricanes!

Linens and towels are supplied but you might want to bring your favorite pillow.  The mattresses are only 3 years old and are no longer the firm boards we used to sleep on so you no longer need an egg crate for relief. If you are driving and have room between all the dyes, tools, sewing machine and fabrics, you might want to add your Ott light and favorite sewing chair. ACA provides clamp-on spotlights and metal folding chairs. You might think about a cushion for your seat!

You can mail us packages of your supplies ahead of time to avoid plane fees or you can visit the nearby Walmart after you arrive.
